The Southern Omo Valley is a region roughly the size of New Jersey and is home to 16 distinct people groups, 14 of which are considered unreached with the gospel.

The people of South Omo face deep spiritual and physical needs, including limited access to clean water, food insecurity and malnutrition, little to no healthcare, and limited educational opportunities. The region is also marked by ongoing intertribal conflict, where competition over land, water, and livestock has led to cycles of violence and loss of life.

In some communities, fear-based traditional beliefs have resulted in the practice of Mingi, in which certain children—often due to birth circumstances or perceived physical traits—are labeled as cursed and killed to prevent believed misfortune from coming upon the tribe. These realities, combined with long-term cultural misrepresentation and neglect, contribute to profound brokenness and highlight the desperate need for hope, reconciliation, and transformation through Christ.

Local Church Partnership & Ministry Approach

Communities often face limited clean water, food insecurity and malnutrition, minimal healthcare, and restricted educational opportunities. Conflict over land, water, and livestock can deepen loss and instability. In some areas, fear-based beliefs have contributed to harmful practices such as mingi, where certain children are labeled as cursed. Local ministry leaders are protecting children, strengthening families, and pursuing reconciliation—showing Christ’s love in tangible ways.

Better Life for Pastoralists and Peaceful Generation exist to cultivate peaceful, sustainable communities in the South Omo Valley through church planting that embodies both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment.

  • Care for vulnerable and abandoned children from local tribes

  • Strengthen surrounding communities through education and discipleship

  • Improve access to clean water and food through practical, sustainable solutions

  • Equip leaders and community members with income-generating skills (farming, livestock, woodworking)

  • Operate a community library that provides a welcoming space for learning and personal development

Together, these efforts address urgent physical needs while building toward long-term spiritual transformation, reconciliation, and hope.
