San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala

San Pedro La Laguna is a predominantly Mayan community on Lake Atitlán where local churches are faithfully serving amid real spiritual and physical needs. Partner teams come alongside them through VBS, evangelism, clean water, and food projects that share Christ’s love in practical ways.

San Pedro La Laguna is home primarily to the Tz’utujil Maya, a people group with deep cultural identity, strong community ties, and a long history of resilience. While the town is known internationally for tourism, many local families continue to face economic hardship, limited employment opportunities, and ongoing challenges related to nutrition and safe drinking water—especially in underserved neighborhoods and surrounding rural areas.

Access to consistent clean water is a pressing concern. Many households rely on aging infrastructure, seasonal rainfall, or untreated water sources, increasing health risks for children and the elderly. Food insecurity also affects families, particularly those dependent on subsistence farming or informal labor, making it difficult to provide consistent, nutritious meals year-round.

Spiritually, the community reflects a blend of Catholic tradition, Evangelical Christianity, and indigenous beliefs, often shaped more by inherited practice than personal engagement with Scripture. Local churches are present and active, yet often lack the resources, personnel, and outside support needed to reach children and families most effectively. This creates a strong opportunity for short-term teams to come alongside—not to replace local leadership, but to strengthen and support what God is already doing through the local church.

Local Church Partnership & Ministry Approach

Local churches serve as the primary hosts and spiritual leaders, guiding outreach with cultural sensitivity, trust, and long term impact. Teams support Vacation Bible School (VBS) and children’s ministry (teaching, worship, and activities) and join local believers in relational evangelism through home visits, prayer, and personal conversations. Practical service is also key—assisting with projects that improve access to clean water and strengthen food security—so the church’s witness is reinforced in both word and deed.

How You Can Partner

There are many aspects of ministry you can partner in, including:

  • Assist local churches with Vacation Bible School (VBS) and children’s/youth ministry (teaching, games, mentoring)

  • Participate in relational evangelism and community outreach alongside local believers (home visits, prayer, conversations)

  • Serve on projects that improve access to clean water and support food security (gardens, small scale chicken farms, organic fertilizer)

  • Encourage local pastors and leaders, and pray for families, churches, and long term spiritual growth

By partnering with local churches, teams can strengthen existing gospel work, serve tangible needs, and walk alongside the people of San Pedro La Laguna in ways that honor their culture and point clearly to Christ.
